Good morning, Pipers! This week is I Love Science Week. Did you know that:  At over 2000 kilometers long, The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth.

There will be a very quick locker clean up to take place at the end per 2: 10:50 -11:00.  Please throw out old lunches etc before the break

Thank you to the students and staff for arranging the Gym blast today. The gym blast starts at 1:15.  All students will be called from per 5 to the gym. Attendance needs to be taken at the start of per 5.
Woods students are to meet in the library.

Reminder to all JT Grads 2015 - Cap and Gown rentals are $25 and due by May 1st.

We have more Safe Grad Fundraising opportunities: Information packages are available at the office for Epicure and Gourmet Kitchen.The last fundraiser for Safe Grad is Rumors Comedy Club on May 1 at 10:30pm. The event is $15.00 per person, profits at 50%. There will be no silent auction or 50/50 to plan. Gourmet Kitchen will be available for pick up April 15th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.  Epicure orders will be available for pickup April 22nd from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Rumors tickets sales and unsold tickets are due April 23rd at 3:30pm. No late ticket sales. If you want tickets, please contact Michelle Delios @deliosmichelle@gmail.com.

There is another scholarship opportunity for Grade 12 students.  Together with the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, Folklorama is pleased to present the Mark & Dorothy Danzker Scholarship for Excellence, an annual award of excellence for the preservation of ethno-cultural heritage.  This $1000 scholarship acknowledges students who demonstrate an active involvement in preserving their ethno-cultural heritage through volunteer work, employment or contributions to a cultural activity within Manitoba.   The application deadline is April 30, 2015.   Please see Mrs. Palmer for more details.

Thank you to John Taylor and Mr. Lockhart for hosting the Safe Schools Forum last night. Staff attendance at the event and support to get it set up are appreciated. A highlight of the event was our JT dance group. A deeply heartfelt thank you to all of the student volunteers at the Safe Schools Forum last night. Your time and efforts helped to make the Forum run smoothly. A smashing success!  A special thank you to Ms. Botincan for organizing the dancers, Ms. Penner for her work with the volunteers and VIP room, Ms. Campbell and the gym class for helping with set up, Ms. Grant for her food distribution and photos, Ms. Palmer for the details and Mrs. James for shining such a positive light on John Taylor.

Attention all grad committee members, today's meeting is cancelled.  Have a wonderful Spring Break and we'll see you on Thursday, April 9th.

You can be part of a dynamic team of your peers helping spread the word about some of the cool things we have to do in and around Winnipeg all summer long. We’re looking for people with communication, social media and digital media interests — everything from being in front of the camera to behind the keyboard. If you’re into video, video games, social media, theatre or music this is probably a good place for you to learn to explore work options that relate your interests and talents. By the end of the summer, you’ll have had a powerful work experience, attended many fun events and have a great job history to put on your resume.  Stop by the office for more details.

This week is I Love Science Week.  Did you know that…The most dangerous animal in the world is the common housefly.  Because of their habits of visiting animal waste, they transmit more disease than any other animal.

Come out and support the soccer team today at 5p.m. at Canlan in the quarter finals.

National Chess Challenge Winner

The Chess Challenge is a national scholastic chess tournament for grades 1 to 12. The Manitoba Provincial Chess Championships was held at the University of Manitoba. The tournament is played by grade. Martin placed 1st among the 5 other competitors. He now has the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the National Chess Challenge Finals in Quebec City during May long weekend. Way to go Martin!!!!

JTC SAFE GRAD FUNDRAISING 2015

John Taylor Safe Grad 2015

To close out our year of fundraising, we will be launching three more all to run over spring break. 

1) Epicure: There is two options with one. You can sell the catalogue products, we will receive 25% of all products sold. There is also Extraordinary Cheese Dip offer, carry bag contains three dip mixes and a recipe booklet. Sells for $20.00, JTC receives $10.00. 
2) Gourmet Kitchen: Profits would be 40% on most items, $9.50 on the remainder. 
3) Rumours Comedy Club:  May 1 @ 10:30  This will be a fun evening for the crowd over 18. The event is $15.00 per person, profits at 50%. There will be no silent auction or 50/50 to plan. Just a relaxing evening with friends. 

For the first two fundraisers, brochures will be available at the school starting March 23, 2015. Grab some, take advantage of seeing family and friends over spring break to promote the product and fundraiser. All orders are due April 9th at 330pm. No late orders will be accepted.  Gourmet Kitchen will be available for pick up April 15th from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.  Epicure orders take a little more turnaround time and will be available for pickup April 22nd from 3:30pm to 5:30pm

Announcements for March 19, 2015

Grade 12 students can pick up their baby pictures from Mr. Kutcy from 12 noon until 12:15 or 3:30 until 3:45 today and tomorrow.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE cream!!  The White Team will be selling ice cream sandwiches and popsicle sticks for $1.00 in the front link today during the lunch hour.  As well, will
all White Team Members meet in Gym C right at 12:03.

Team Blue will be hosting a Pie Throwing Fundraiser in the cafeteria today at lunch.  Mr. Lockhart, Mr. Wiebe, and Faith Kettle have donated their faces!  Pies are $2 each.  Come on down and throw some pie!

Attention Grads:  This is your last chance to purchase your Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser tickets taking place this Saturday, March 21st.   $6 from every ticket sold goes TOWARDS your Grad.  Tickets will be on sale in the Front Link during the lunch hours.

Future First

Mr. Goetz put forth a request on behalf of John Taylor to partner with MTS to receive a grant of $500 for our breakfast program. MTS retired members volunteer their time on a committee called Future First. The committee's mission is to help connect today's youth to tomorrow.As you can see the wonderful MTS volunteers granted our request. A big thank you to Bob McNaughton and Sharon Monkhouse on bringing our request to their committee and helping us connect today's youth to tomorrow.

Attention all Gym Blast Teams, in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, today’s challenge is to wear green.  The team with the most members wearing green wins the St. Patty’s Day Challenge.

Reminder that there is a meeting today during the lunch hour in room 111 for all interested students (Grades 9-12) who would like to volunteer on March 25 from 4-7 PM.  Please see Mrs Penner if you have a conflict with activities during lunch and would like to volunteer.

Congratulations to our JT Students who won every grade level of this year’s Manitoba Engineers Spaghetti Bridge Contest.

And the Overall  winner was Shane Bigourdin

The contest was a success.  John Taylor students brought home $550 in cash prizes and helped in the donation of over 14000 pounds of food to Winnipeg Harvest.

A special Thanks to Mr. Francis for encouraging and supporting this event.

Calling all JT students who would have time to volunteer at a Divisional event being hosted at JT on Wednesday, March 25 from 4:30-6:30.  We will be holding a meeting for those interested in volunteering, on Tuesday March 17 in room 111 at the lunch bell.  See you there.

The Hoe Down, Throw Down, Spring Dance will take place tonight at 7p.m. Last chance to purchase your tickets today at noon in the front link.  The RED team is currently in the lead.  The White Team is close behind. The challenge is on! Come out and join your friends for a fun evening of dancing and good times.

Announcements for March 11, 2015

We have sold 3/4 of the needed attendance for tomorrow’s Hoe Down, Throw Down, Spring Dance.  To make this a successful event, we need at least 26 more tickets sold.  Pipers grab a partner and spin them around to the front link to buy your ticket.  We will announce at 1p.m. today if the dance will take place.

Just a reminder that Girls’ soccer has been cancelled today.  Our next session will be Thursday evening at 7pm if the dance is NOT taking place.  Please let Ms. Armistead know if you cannot make it to the session.

Just a reminder that Art Club is on today @ 3:30p.m. in the Art Room.  Everyone is welcome.

Attention Grads Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser breakfast is taking place on March 21st from 8-10 a.m.  Tickets are $10 and 60% of the proceeds will be donated to Grad 2015.  Tickets go on sale this Thursday, March 12, and again next week on the 16th to 18th during the lunch hour.

Announcements for March 10, 2015

Congratulations Pipers! Out of 122 participants for March Mathletic Madness, our first week winners are Kianna Walker, Abbey Middlestead and Tyler Gomm! Abbey won a free lunch from the cafeteria for being our top point-getter this week.

Congratulations to the JT choir for their silver award for their performance at Westminster church last night.  They sang with great feeling and exciting energy.

Girls’ soccer for tomorrow has been cancelled.  Our next session will be Thursday evening at 7pm if the dance is NOT taking place.  Please let Ms. Armistead know if you cannot make it to the session.

Just a reminder that Art Club is tomorrow @ 3:30p.m. in the Art Room.

The University of Toronto is holding an International Biology competition - similar to math contests held earlier this year. The aim of the competition is to provide all high school students with an opportunity to test their knowledge and understanding of biology. Scholarships to the University of Toronto, cash, and certificates of high achievement are available for the top competitors. The competition assumes a knowledge of Grades 11 and 12 Biology.  If you have completed Gr. 12 biology last year or first semester this year, please see Mrs. Shepherd in room 307 to sign up.  Registrations are due Friday, March 6.

Are you between the ages of 15 and 18?  Meet with youth from across the province and learn more about yourself and others at a Co-op Youth Leadership retreat.  A Co-op Youth Leadership retreat is your chance to develop leadership skills, and learn about cross cultural issues, global development and co-ops, all in a beautiful camp setting.  Please see Ms. Grant in the guidance office for more details.

Need Volunteer Hours?  There is a great opportunity coming up for students to earn hours.  Volunteers are needed for the Festival of Fools and Kidsfest.  Please see the office for more details.

Announcements for March 2, 2015

Musical rehearsal will be cancelled during the lunch hour today.

Attention all students signed up for Mathletics. March is Mathletic Madness! For every correct answer on Mathletic lessons, tests and live competitions, you earn points towards prizes in a national competition. At John Taylor we will have draws for prizes each week from all participants and a grand prize at the end of March for the top point leader. Stay tuned for more details!!

There is a Semi - Final High School Manitoba Improv League Exhibition Game on Tuesday March 3rd @ 6:30 PM at the Gas Station Theatre in Osborne Village. Tickets are $8 for adults or $5 for students. Please come out and cheer our team on!
