Water Advisory

In the event that the water fountains may be turned off at JT on Wednesday due to the Boil Water Advisory across Winnipeg we are encouraging all students to bring bottled water to school.

Announcements for January 23, 2015

Just a reminder that next week students need only attend school for their exams and assessments which start at 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. The library is open for students to use till 3:30 and many teachers are hosting study and extra help sessions during the week.

An updated Exam seating chart and Exam conflict information has been posted in the front link.  Please make sure to check the information prior to your exam.  Please see Mrs. Palmer if you have any questions.

The Piper hockey team defeated The provincially #1 ranked Oak Park Raiders last night at the MTS Iceplex. Wyatt Kemball continued his torrid pace against the Raiders, scoring the game’s opening goal and adding an assist. A great way to celebrate his birthday!  Shane Bigourdin broke a 1-1 tie in the third with a breakaway goal and Dylan Reinheimer scored the eventual game winner off a rocket shot from the slot. Reiner also took home the Golden Wrench for the team’s hardest worker.  Jacob Gnidziejko stopped 25 of 27 shots to record the victory.

There is a ME to WE - Leading Change Scholarship Opportunity for Graduating Grade 12.  Deadline Feb. 19, 2015.  Please see Ms. Olko for details.

Grad is right around the corner.  John Taylor has a new partnership with Gowns for Grads 2015.Gowns for Grads is a volunteer initiative started by the Laura Milner White Committee and provides grad dresses to girls who are graduating but are having difficulty affording a dress. Thank you to Mrs. Penner for arranging this opportunity.  Please contact Mrs. Palmer if you would like more information about donating to the Gowns for Grad program or if you know someone who could benefit from the services that Gowns for Grad provides.

Student interested in working at Bridges Golf course near Starbuck Manitoba, please see Mr. Johnson for more information, The jobs include Bag Drop, Beverage Cart, Pro-Shop and Maintenance. The jobs start when the golf course opens and goes thru to Golf course closure in the fall.

Assiniboine Downs needs two part time workers starting in May, you must be 18 years old and be able to lift straw bails, see Mr. Johnson for more information.

Thank you to Mrs. James and Mrs. Licando for organizing a very successful post-secondary education event at John Taylor last night. Our student volunteers helped make it a great experience for everyone who attended.

There will be a boys soccer meeting at lunch today.   Please meet in room 209.   We will be taking a team photo.

There is a Musical meeting today in the theatre @ 11:55 to confirm participation. All students who signed up for musical must attend. If you are unable to make it, please see Ms. Botincan or Ms. Carter. Hope to see all you guys and dolls there!

The Pipers hockey team destroyed the 6th ranked River East Kodiaks last night at the Gateway arena 6-1. Shane B led the way with a hat trick and an assist. Dylan R had 2 goals and an assist. Jacob G won the Golden Wrench award for hardest working Piper as he stopped 32 of 33 shots and recorded 2 assists on the night.

Congratulations to our JV Boys Basketball team who crushed Vincent Massey last night 72-42.  The Pipers were lead by Jacob M. with 13 points and Brett A. with 16 points.  Practice tonight at 5:30pm.

Announcements for January 13, 2015

The following boys represented John Taylor in The Winnipeg High School Hockey League All-Star Game in the "A" Division or Platinum Promotion game. The players are Dylan R., Wyatt K., Shane B., Josh J. and Jacob G. They were on the Gold team and won the game in a shoot-out 6 to 5. All played very well and had a great experience.

Anyone with their refereeing certification in basketball who is interested in refereeing at the middle years level please see Ms. Armistead in room 303 as soon as possible.  You will be paid per game.

Thank you to all the staff and students who worked so hard to organize the Piper Classic into a successful event.  In addition, thank you to Trustee Chegus for his assistance with the awards. It was well organized and the games were exciting to watch. Most importantly, many parents commented on how the student volunteers were helpful, knowledgeable and polite. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a great event for JT.

Attention all students: If you signed up to volunteer for this year's Piper Classic Tournament, you are required to attend a brief information meeting today at 12:03 in Ms. Paragg's room (room 109).  As well, All volunteers who need changes to their schedules or who are unable to work their shifts MUST attend this meeting.

Grade 12 Grads who are wanting to sell the Curves coupons please pick up your packages from Mrs. Penner (Room 113) Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 12:10.  You will have until January 16 to sell the coupons.  Remember that this a 100% profit opportunity going toward General Grad expenses.

ATTENTION ALL GRADE 11 & 12 INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

 

Did you know that all of these institutions support First Nations, Metis and Inuit students by providing Elders on residence, traditional medicines and teachings at their intuitions? Did you also know that Children who have spent time in the Child and Family “System” are eligible for tuition waivers

Confirmed institutions that will be in attendance will include:

• Red River College
• University of Manitoba
• University of Winnipeg 
• Southern Network of Care (CFS)

Join us for an evening of bannock and tea and learn what these wonderful Post-Secondary institutions have to offer

Students and caregivers are invited to the cafeteria at John Taylor Collegiate to attend an informational evening with Post-Secondary institutions on Tuesday January 20th, 2015. Each institution will have a table set-up with information and will share a brief presentation beginning at 7:00pm

-45 Degrees Celsius & Colder - School Bus Cancellations

Please check the weather each morning to determine whether or not buses are cancelled for the day in the Metro area. -45 degrees Celsius or colder (with windchill) is one of the determining factors.  The news media is also alerted to cancellations and Division websites are updated to reflect any announcement. Parents of bussed students can then determine whether or not they want to send/drive their children to school.
